I am wanting very much to purchase a digital camera so that I may share with you all some groovy images of the ROK, and I have almost convinced She Who Must Be Obeyed that such a purchase would be a good thing. Being the underpaid academic (read : 'lazy bastard') that I am, though, I am of necessity on a rather tight budget. Anyone out there in blogspace have any recommendations or warnings that I should keep in mind in purchasing a (relatively) low-end camera? The Fuji FinePix 2600z looks pretty good, at the moment...

Chris,
Find out as much as you can about the battery life. Some digital cameras chew through batteries, others give much better battery life. The optics on all the major brands are fairly close to each other in image quality.
I bought a Sony DSC-S70 (3MP) a couple of years ago and it's been excellent. The battery lasts a couple of hours at least (it's an InfoLithium battery). You might want to compare the Fuji with an equivalent Sony or Canon model.
I'm looking forward to seeing some pix on your site...

I would recommend any of the entry-level Olympus cameras... I've owned two of them and I've been extremely pleased.

Its not the cheapest model on the market, but I've recently bought a Canon IXUS-V and its a dream to use. Plus it is compact and bijou, and thus easy to carry around meaning that I tend to have it with me when I want to take a snap rather than having to premeditate my photography.

I have a Nikon 995 and really like it. You've seen the results. It is towards the high end, though.

we have a fuji finepix 4800Z and it's very peachy. It takes excellent pictures, is user friendly, and being designed by porsche, it looks lovely too. the best part is that it comes with a cradle.
