Same As It Ever Was

And you may find yourself living in a shotgun shack And you may find yourself in another part of the world And you may find yourself behind the wheel of a large automobile And you may find yourself in a beautiful house, with a beautiful wife And you may ask yourself-Well...How did I get here?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!
Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...

Water dissolving...and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Carry the water at the bottom of the ocean
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean!

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

And you may ask yourself
What is that beautiful house?
And you may ask yourself
Where does that highway go?
And you may ask yourself
Am I right?...Am I wrong?
And you may tell yourself
MY GOD!...WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/in the silent water
Under the rocks and stones/there is water underground.

Letting the days go by/let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by/water flowing underground
Into the blue again/after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime/water flowing underground.

Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...
Same as it ever was...Same as it ever was...

Possibly the best Talking Heads song there was, and which reminds me that I always wondered what a "shotgun shack" was, and that I'd never looked it up before. I'm not surprised to find an Elvis connection. There's always an Elvis connection.

I found myself repeatedly humming that song while going through the process of buying & then moving into my new house...something to do with my own sense of unreality, I suppose.

  3. I love that song. I also love the weird arm/hand gestures Byrne does while singing it (as seen in "Stop Making Sense").

  4. Yep, it's a cool tune, probably one their better ones. The video was pretty nifty too.

    But, um...Stavros, is everything okay?

Cool song that I haven't heard for a long time. I have been wondering of late why I don't hear much good music on the radio lately and come to the conclusion that I must be getting old. Fuck.

  6. aaron : Thanks for asking...I'm thinking I might put the old 'bottle on hiatus for a while. We'll see what the Oracle of Beer has to tell me later tonight...

I saw David Byrne almost a year ago at a club in the Pittsburgh warehouse district. FANTASTIC! His band rocked. While he still went with multiple percussionists they weren't upfront in the mix. While he played the only guitar to be found onstage, it felt like old times.

Oh, and my vote for his best song is STILL 'Life During Wartime'. :-)
